I am an engineering student learning the fundamentals of structural mechanics, structural dynamics, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics while contemplating the future of naval architecture and ocean engineering. Although I still have much to learn, I am eager to improve and grow. I would greatly appreciate any guidance and knowledge you can share with me.
Volunteering Experience in Underprivileged Educational Areas
In South Korea, many educational facilities and resources are concentrated in Seoul, making it difficult for students in other regions to access the same opportunities. To help bridge this gap, I participated in Nanum Classroom, a volunteer club at Seoul National University, where I mentored high school students in Yecheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, for a week.
About two months before traveling to Yecheon, my fellow club members and I planned what subjects to teach. We covered essential subjects such as math, science, and English, along with discussions on career concerns and the challenges of student life. Beyond academic tutoring, we shared personal experiences and formed deep connections with the students. This experience allowed me to truly understand the value of giving back and the significance of mentorship.
Building on this experience, I am always seeking opportunities to communicate and learn from diverse individuals. This is precisely why I am applying for the Shell internship. I am eager to interact with people from all over the world, gain insight into their perspectives, and take a step forward in my personal growth. More than just acquiring knowledge, I am excited about the opportunity to engage with individuals from various backgrounds and broaden my own worldview.
Experience as the 33rd Student Council President of the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Department at Seoul National University
As the 33rd Student Council President of the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Department at Seoul National University, I represented the student body and took charge of planning and executing various events. Additionally, I oversaw the council’s financial management and executive affairs to ensure smooth operations.
One of the key initiatives I led was the freshman welcome event, designed to help new students quickly adapt to university life. I also managed the efficient use of student council funds by organizing four annual snack events, providing tangible benefits to my peers. Furthermore, I arranged a department-wide gathering where students had the opportunity to interact with professors and alumni, engage in meaningful discussions, and enjoy performances by our department’s band, along with various games. This event received highly positive feedback from both students and faculty members.
Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of leadership. Initially, I believed I was elected simply because I was qualified for the role. However, I soon realized that leadership comes not only with authority but also with significant responsibilities—far greater than I had previously imagined. While planning and executing activities for my peers was often demanding, both physically and mentally, the joy of seeing them smile and benefit from our efforts made it all worthwhile. This experience allowed me to grow as a leader and as an individual.
This realization is what led me to apply for the Shell internship. Just as my time as student council president provided me with invaluable insights and inspiration, I believe that working at Shell will offer another transformative experience. I look forward to engaging with diverse individuals and exceptional mentors, gaining fresh perspectives, and further developing my approach to life. I am excited about the opportunity to expand my horizons and embrace new challenges through this internship.
