The deep, rich tone of the bass in the hands of a 12-year-old boy, and the way it pounded into my heart - that's what I remember about my first encounter with the bass, and it hasn't changed since. I've always felt that there was something missing in my music, and I wasn't satisfied with my jazz studies in Korea, so I traveled to the United States. There, the bass masters I had only heard about on records and books were alive and well, and I was able to meet bassists Eugene Levinson, John Patitucci, Sean Smith, Mike Richmond, Martin Wind, and Tony Falanga in person, take private lessons with them, and learn firsthand about their views on music and life over meals and tea.
I believe that music is not all about acquiring skills, and my teachers emphasized that a lot to me as well. Playing better than anyone else and playing more than anyone else can certainly be a part that cannot be ignored, but it cannot be the whole. I believe that the most important thing is to put your soul into your music, to put your heart, your love, or any other emotion, and how you do it, and to be able to open up and communicate with others.
I have a driving force that keeps me moving forward in life, and new encounters and new experiences give me great energy. I believe that I am blessed to have a happy life, always surrounded by beautiful music.

Ku Il Oh is Chair of the Department of Applied Music at Mokwon University in Daejeon, South Korea. Mokwon University is located in the center of Korea and is one of the top music universities in the country, specializing in jazz music, pop music, music technology, and other disciplines necessary for the changing music industry. Since 2013, Oh has been teaching bass major private lessons, improvisation, ensemble, jazz harmony, and rhythm training classes. As Chair of the Department of Applied Music since 2019, Dr. Oh is responsible for the overall administration of the department, the allocation of class time, and the admission and graduation of 100 undergraduate and graduate students. As a representative of the 24 faculty members, he is constantly working with faculty members to create a quality teaching environment.
In addition, he is a member of the Daejeon Jazz Festival Promotion Committee, which organizes the Daejeon Jazz Festival every year and performs various tasks necessary for the festival.
After being active as a composer and bassist in Korea's K-pop and jazz scene, Ku Il Oh moved to the United States in 2003 to become a richer and more capable musician, where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Bass from the City University of New York and a Master of Music in Jazz Bass from New York University. While studying under his mentor, jazz artist John Patitucci, who directly imparted much of his musical sense, musical thinking, and even life philosophy, Ku Il Oh recruited jazz pianist Anthony Pocetti and drummer John Bishop, whom he had met while a professor at New York University, to form the Ku Il Oh Trio, creating their own sound.
In December 2010, he released the Ku Il Oh Trio's first album, Wood Bridge. The album features Dave Pollack, a renowned New York alto saxophonist, and is a fresh sounding album with all original compositions. His first album release concert was held at the Promise Theater in Manhattan, and he quickly gained fans throughout New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
The release of Ku Il Oh Trio's second album, Holiday Songs Volume One, in December 2011, garnered widespread public support and paved the way for Ku Il Oh Trio to spread its music in concerts large and small. In particular, this album was a familiar and heartfelt holiday song that can be found everywhere in New York City, and he performed his signature songs, gaining the love and attention of many people.
In November 2012, he released his third album, New York Style, which showcased his lyrical sensibility and sometimes unique and powerful jazz charm, and set the stage for him to gain fans all over the world, from the United States to Europe.
He began his domestic career at the 2013 Daejeon Jazz Festival with Ku Il Oh Trio, where he performed at the festival's final concert.
