Research study title: The effect of verbal vs non-verbal auditory distractors on encoding constructed vocabulary in long term memory.
Faculty advisor: Professor Carina Pals; Psychology department at University of Utah Asia Campus
Related field: Cognitive Psychology, Neuro psychology, Learning & Memory, Language
Detail: It was a experimental research study aimed to Undergraduate students to explore the effect of auditory distractors while memorizing the vocabulary. It was factorial design by 3*2, 3 different conditions of sounds and two different conditions, verbal vs non-verbal. In this study, we compared two different group whether the verbal sounds affect to their attention for the LTM (Long Term Memory) with three different sound conditions; music, ASMR, and silence.
Participants: Participants were college students in both Incheon Global Campus and local college in Incheon, the age range was 18 to 30. We recruited the participants who are in fluent with English or Korean.
Method: It took approximately 75 minutes. There were three trials for each individuals. Participants were seperated in two groups, music and ASMR. Each group listened all of the three different sound effects during the memorizing the word 'Lojban', the Artificial language made by linguistic scholars, for 10 minutes. After they finished the encoding task, they were asked to solve a SUDOKU for 5 minutes with no sounds. For last, participants were asked to do retrieval test, which is the vocabulary test with no sounds. It is a whole process for one trial, and participants did three different trials with different conditions.
Result: Unfortunately, there were no significant difference between two groups. We set up three different hypothesis, and only one hypothesis was satisfied.
After the research study, we participated in IGC research symposium and presented the poster and shared our research experience to them.
