My journey into the realm of pharmacy began in the vibrant setting of a community pharmacy, where I was first introduced to the complexities and rewards of medication management and patient care. Although I do not have previous experience in NHS Trusts (hospitals), this foundational experience in community pharmacy, characterized by my proactive approach to resolving patient queries by working in partnership with GP and hospitals, and challenging myself to breakthrough the comfort zone were instrumental in expanding my pharmacological knowledge, enhancing problem-solving skills, and exploring my passion in patient-centered care.
Importantly, with the on-going issue of out-of-stock medications due to Brexit and Wars, I learned to navigate the intricate logistics of pharmaceutical supply chains, ensuring that patient care remained uninterrupted by identifying and proposing viable alternative medications. This role was not just about managing inventory, yet it was about ensuring the continuity of care for those who depended on us, the healthcare professionals.
In the fast-paced environment of community pharmacy, where the workload often stretches the limits of what seems manageable, I have honed my ability to thrive under pressure. My commitment to patient care and responsibility means that no task is left unattended, no matter the volume of work, which fits well into the MKUH Trust’s value: ‘We CARE’. This experience has equipped me with exceptional time management and prioritization skills, enabling me to efficiently navigate and resolve high-stress situations without compromising on the quality of care provided to patients. My resilience and dedication in patient-centered care are assets I look forward to bringing to a hospital setting, in which I believe is the most important characteristic healthcare professionals must carry.
In my pursuit of excellence in pharmacy practice, I took on the responsibility of managing multi-compartment compliance aids for over 60 patients. This task requires meticulous attention to detail, a deep understanding of individual patient needs, and the ability to anticipate and mitigate potential adherence issues, ensuring that every decision and action revolves around the well-being and individual needs of each patient. My on-going experience of making sure that all patients are looked after fits wells into the MKUH Trust’s Value ‘We contribute’ in bringing about exceptional patient care. It was through this responsibility that I developed a keen appreciation for the critical role of personalized care in medication management.
The challenges and opportunities I encountered in the community pharmacy setting have inspired me to seek a role in a hospital pharmacy, where the scope for clinical involvement and impact is significantly broader. I am particularly drawn to the prospect of working within a multidisciplinary team, contributing to complex clinical decision-making processes, applying my skills in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, and continuously being eager to learn. The transition to hospital pharmacy represents an opportunity for me to leverage my background in direct patient care, medication management, and interprofessional collaboration in a setting that offers unparalleled opportunities for professional growth and learning, fulfilling the MKUH’s Trust vision: We Collaborate and Communicate.
My experience in community pharmacy has afforded me countless opportunities to directly impact patient care, from managing medication stock issues to ensuring the safe and effective use of medications in Monitored-dosage-systems (MDS). These experiences have not only deepened my commitment to patient welfare but have also equipped me with the skills to promote what’s possible: independence, opportunity and choice. Excellence in every aspect of my work is a goal I strive for daily. My proactive approaches to patient safety, particularly in consulting with healthcare professionals over medication dosages and treatments, reflects my dedication to push myself forward to be independent and professional. This commitment extends to my eagerness to learn from both successes and setbacks, viewing each as an opportunity to strengthen my characteristics.
The experience of working in multidisciplinary teams with GPs and hospitals has taught me the importance of good-communication, combining our experiences, skills, and talents to find innovative solutions to complex care challenges, promoting Professionalism and Honesty to achieve a better patient care. I thrive in environments that foster teamwork and creativity, and I am keen to bring my collaborative spirit to MKUH. As I look forward to this next phase of my career, I am eager to bring my unique blend of experiences, skills, and personal qualities that I absorbed from the US, South Korea and the UK. My strengths include a robust foundation in pharmacy practice, honed in the challenging environment of a community pharmacy; an adaptive mindset, cultivated through managing unexpected medication shortages; and a patient-centered approach, refined through developing personalized medication management plans. Furthermore, my ability to communicate effectively with both patients and healthcare professionals positions me as a valuable team player in any clinical setting.
In conclusion, my journey from a trainee pharmacist to a potential hospital pharmacy team member has been driven by a constant desire to improve patient outcomes, a commitment to continuous learning, and a passion for embracing new challenges. I am confident that my experiences have prepared me to make meaningful contributions to patient care in a hospital setting. With a foundation built on resilience, adaptability, and a deep-seated commitment to patient well-being, I am ready to take on the responsibilities of a hospital pharmacist and contribute to the excellence of your healthcare team.
