Internship experience reflection

During 10 week duration of internship, I learned many things related to football and basketball team training (Strength and conditioning). Olympic lift, power lift, how to plan training program, spotting technique, preparing equipment and getting back to original location, and sanitization, importance of volume, intensity, and loading during training were the things that I l learned in Whitney athletic center sports and conditioning team.

First, during intern meeting, I learned Olympic lifting mobility concept and actual motion. Two concepts are power traits and power adaptation. Power trait exercise is the any strength and explosive workout using weight such as sled pushing, pulling, side stepping with heavy weight sleds. On the other hand, power adaptation exercise is more likely the motion technique such as various plyometric jump.

During Olympic lifting exercises which are clean, jerk and snatch. Clean and jerk are continuous motion from the ground to above the head with stretched arm motion at the end. From Rumanian deadlift, toe, knee, waist bounce in the sequence and shrug to move the bar to the front squat position (Clean). Then bounce the body again with extreme strength jump to push the bar straight up the head (Jerk). These two continuous motions fare in narrow grip of the bar. Snatch is wide grip exercise. Wide grip from the ground and Rumanian deadlift motion, toes up bouncing body to jump then push over to stretch all arm to upper head. Those drop clean and wits, strength work out was hard to do. Especially, when I do the snatch, it was difficult to balance my shoulder.

Second, in planning program, I could learn both basketball and football training system during preseason competition. Monday is moderate to low intensity practice day to warm up and activate football player’s body. Tuesday and Wednesday are high intensity high volume exercise to extremely increase their performance in harsh cycle. Thursday is resting day with slight walking. Friday is slight warm up with high intensity 30 minutes practice. Then Saturday is the actual competition game day. Therefore, those Friday warm up and body activation before taking a bus is essential for athlete’s elevated performance as possible. Lastly Sunday is optional recovery day. Those weeks exercise plan is optimistic for athlete’s best body condition maintenance before their big game competition.

Third, I learned spotting technique of squat, bench press, and dumbbell press. Whenever players do the dumbbell press or bench press, stand just behind them and just ready hand but not touch the bar unless they are lack of strength to lift the bar or dumbbell. When they do the squat, the person who support need to stand behind them and hold their chest to assist lifting up in men’s cases. On the other hand, hold shoulder to assist squat in women’s cases.

Fourth, volume, intensity, and exercise repetition rates are strongly interrelated with each other. When Intensity and volume of workout increases, repetition goes down since person cannot do high repetition in high weight. This is called loading. On the contrary, person who have high repetition motion, then intensity and volume decreases. This is called deloading. Based on every athlete’s player’s body condition with injury, or training type such as power explosiveness, drive, and speed strength are determined.

During learning, and participation as an intern, I enjoyed physical learning every workout routine with Olympic lyft and bodybuilding lift. Even though practice those motion by myself was considerably difficult in some ways, I think one action is better than 100 sentence word. In addition, I felt the powerful energy oozes out from all athletes’ players. Whenever football players do the weightlifting with heavy weight, every other player come to that person and shouting, and encouraging that person to do that motion completely. Whenever, I see their encouragement, I am sure that people felt courage to do something not only restricted to workout but also in other action.

Moreover, I like to see their promotion and my promotion as I workout after training over in daily life. Weightlifting promotion, performance promotion, and coach warm up, activation, drive, cardiovascular exercise build up in every possibly ways. Everything was calculated based on athletes body condtion and performance rate. I also like the sports medicine department which is immediately deal with player’s body injuries.

In conclusion, I don’t have any disliking things. I would rather want to learn about their strength and conditioning skills and searching for possible certification such as CSCS certification. Whoever want to apply to strength and conditioning, I strongly recommend them this place to physical and mental benefits
